Summer Reading Encouragement

By: Lanette Judy

Modeling reading a good book is such an important thing to do for our children. I often put it off as the last thing on my “to do” list. I find that when I pick up a book, my kids pick one up too and we all end up spending time reading. This is a great habit to start this summer. Here are some tips to try with your family.

  • Long road trips always call for several books to be packed so that everyone can have quiet time in the car to read.

  • Going to the pool or the beach? “Don't forget your book!”

  • Make frequent trips to the library so there are always new and interesting books available for your children to read.

  • Set a Goal- this can be individually or as a family, of the number of books you'd like to read and decide on an award. Getting ice cream is always popular with my family.

  • Don't be afraid to set a time together to read… teens included. They may even end up enjoying it!

Use our attached template to keep a log of your reading this summer. We look forward to partnering with you in reading great literature.
